Faculty of Medicine
In October 2021, it was announced that the University of Prince Edward Island would establish a Faculty of Medicine to house a joint Doctor of Medicine degree in partnership with the Memorial University of Newfoundland.
Unique in Canada, the new degree will bring together the strengths of both institutions—rural and family medicine, nursing, clinical psychology, paramedicine, veterinary medicine, climate change and adaptation, sustainable design engineering. A UPEI Faculty of Medicine will increase training opportunities for future family doctors and general specialists, and support the medical career aspirations of Island youth.
A medical school at UPEI will be made in PEI for all of PEI, featuring a “unique-in-Canada” joint Doctor of Medicine degree with Memorial University to meet the needs of Islanders from tip to tip.

The joint Doctor of Medicine program will be primarily based on Memorial University’s established curriculum and be modified based on UPEI’s strengths to meet the needs of Islanders. This one-of-a-kind partnership means we’re not starting from scratch, allowing us to accelerate our planning.
The process to receive full accreditation from the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools (CACMS) and approval from the Atlantic Advisory Committee on Health Human Resources (AACHHR) and the Maritime Provinces Higher Education Commission (MPHEC) is now underway.
Pending approvals from accreditation bodies, the UPEI Faculty of Medicine’s first intake of 20 students will begin their studies in August 2025.
